Residency Program! We think you will find our innovative, 8-8-8, Clinic-First
model to be the ideal setting to learn, train, and practice. We are proud
to offer two distinct and clinically excellent training experiences: the
Butler Track and the Clarion Rural Track. Both tracks are fully integrated
with our unique 2x2, Clinic-First Model.
The Butler Family Medicine Residency: Comprehensive Community Medicine
Based primarily at Butler Memorial Hospital, this track offers a full-spectrum
community medicine experience. As a resident here, you will be the primary
driver of patient care, learning to manage complex inpatient cases, critical
care, pediatric admissions, and obstetrics.
What to expect: An immersive experience where you will learn to navigate
the complexities of rural healthcare, often serving as the primary point
of access for your patients.
The Clinical Home: Training in Butler and Clarion places an emphasis on
autonomy, resource management, community leadership, and broad-spectrum
procedural skills—ensuring you graduate fully equipped to practice
confidently in any rural or resource-limited setting.

Same Rigorous Curriculum, Two Locations: All our residents receive their
PGY-1 foundational training in Butler. Whether you are in the Butler or
the Clarion Track, your senior years of training continue to build upon
that foundation.

all residents have two “golden” weekends per block.
Clinic-First Model: Our clinic model places continuity of care and the
patient-physician relationship at the forefront. More time with patients
means better outcomes and better longitudinal resident learning.
Applying
Applicants who interview with us are able to apply to one or both tracks.
We accept 4 residents each year into each track. All residents spend their
PGY-1 year in Butler. Clarion Track-matched applicants will then move
to Clarion for their PGY-2 and 3 years.

Mission: Our mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of people by
providing compassionate, high-quality care and comfort, and inspiring
health and wellbeing. We do this by providing a high-quality, academically
challenging, and patient-oriented training program for those who have
been called to serve as family medicine physicians.
Vision: Our vision is to be recognized as the preeminent Family Medicine Residency
program in the state and region, while producing the highest-caliber Family
Medicine physicians who make a positive impact in the communities in which
they serve.
How We Achieve Our Vision: Butler Family Medicine Residency (Butler FMR) is an innovative, cutting-edge
residency program that puts patient-care at the forefront of training.
As a Clinic-First program, resident physicians maintain high continuity
with their patients. Whereas the average FM resident only spends 13% of
their total time in the office, residents at Butler FMR will spend more
than 40% of their total residency time taking care of patients in the
ambulatory setting. Residents work in care teams throughout their 3 years
and will set the standard for patient care and outcomes in residency training
programs. Our residents will not only be part of the Butler community,
they will be part of the fabric of all of Butler County. Most residents
will spend two years in a longitudinal private practice setting where
they will see patients two half-days per month. These practices are in
rurally-designated areas where residents will make a significant impact
on the lives of those patients and their community. For residents who
are pursuing fellowships, they will be able to gear their longitudinal
time towards endeavors and specialties that will advance that goal, such
as Palliative Care or Sports Medicine.
