Joint Replacement

Joint replacement surgery is a procedure where an orthopedic surgeon removes a damaged joint and replaces it with a new, artificial part. A joint is where two or more bones come together, like the knee, hip, and shoulder. Sometimes, the surgeon will not remove the whole joint, but will only replace or fix the damaged parts.

The doctor may suggest a joint replacement to help improve your quality of life. Osteoarthritis is a common cause of joint pain, and wear and tear. Replacing a joint can relieve pain and help you move and feel better. Hips and knees are replaced most often but other joints can be replaced including, the shoulders, fingers, ankles, and elbows.

Common reasons people may need a joint replacement include:

  • Certain fractures or injuries
  • Joint destruction from different types of arthritis
  • Degeneration and pain due to wear and tear

At Independence Health System, we offer joint replacement programs to help you to learn more about your upcoming surgery and what you can expect before, during and after surgery.
