Breastfeeding and Lactation Support Services

Breastfeeding is a special journey that can have ups and downs. While rewarding, breastfeeding can feel challenging and maybe even impossible. During your hospital stay, our specialists are there to help you and your baby learn to breastfeed. Did you know that the same breastfeeding support is available outside of the hospital once you go home? There’s no need to struggle in silence. Providers that specialize and have additional training in breastfeeding support are here to help you on your unique breastfeeding journey.

There are many possible reasons that can lead to breastfeeding challenges. Below are some of the most common.

Common Breastfeeding Challenges

Sore/cracked nipples

  • Poor latch or tongue tie
  • Engorgement
  • Low milk supply
  • Plugged ducts
  • Mastitis (This is swelling and redness or inflammation of the breast tissue that can sometimes lead to infection.)

Ways A Specialist Can Help with Breastfeeding

Your lactation specialist will:

  • Review the health history of you and your baby
  • Observe a feeding and provide coaching as you and your baby navigate breastfeeding
  • Give tips on positioning, posture, and ways to become more comfortable breastfeeding
  • Help you with your breast pump and make sure it fits you properly
  • Teach you how to know if your baby is getting enough breastmilk and gaining enough weight — these could be things like counting dirty and wet diapers or using a scale to weigh your baby before and after feedings
  • Other therapies may include therapeutic ultrasound, massage, and mobility exercises

Your Lactation Specialist Can Help Answer

  • How do I ease nipple pain?
  • How can I get my baby to latch?
  • How can I tell if my baby is hungry?
  • How do I know if my baby is eating enough?
  • How long should my baby nurse from each breast?
  • What breastfeeding positions do you recommend?
  • How do I get or keep a good milk supply?
  • When do you recommend hand expression of milk or pumping?

If you’re experiencing challenges with breastfeeding, know you’re not alone. Our specialists are here to help you and your baby by crafting a custom plan and providing therapies to help you both on your journey. Talk to your OB/GYN and pediatrician about your concerns. Your baby's pediatrician will be able to refer you for a lactation consult.
