Butler Memorial Hospital enhances knee replacement surgery with new robotic-assisted technology

BUTLER, Pa., Aug. 21, 2026 — Independence Health System's Butler Memorial Hospital has introduced advanced robotic-assisted technology that provides orthopedic surgeons with real-time data to help personalize total knee replacement procedures and support surgical accuracy.

The addition of ROSA® Knee Robotic Technology reflects the hospital's continued investment in advanced orthopedic care and expands the surgical tools available to physicians. The surgeon-controlled robotic surgical assistant uses a camera and optical trackers, similar to a GPS-style navigation system, to provide real-time information about a patient's knee anatomy and joint position during surgery. This data, combined with the surgeon's expertise, helps guide implant positioning and supports informed, surgeon-directed decision-making.

“Robotic-assisted surgical technology is another tool that allows us to tailor knee replacement surgery to each patient's unique anatomy,” said Dr. Anthony Mustovich, DO, orthopedic surgeon at Butler Memorial Hospital. “By providing detailed, real-time information during the procedure, it helps us make informed decisions that support the best possible outcome for each patient. Our goal is to help patients experience improved function, reduced pain and a faster return to the activities they enjoy.”

Total knee replacement surgery is often recommended for patients whose chronic knee pain or limited mobility has not improved with nonsurgical treatments. The innovative technology supports surgeons by providing additional data throughout the procedure, while allowing them to customize treatment based on each patient's individual anatomy and needs.

Patients considering knee replacement surgery are encouraged to speak with their orthopedic surgeon or provider to learn more about their treatment options. For more information about orthopedic services at Butler Memorial Hospital, visit independence.health or call 833-604-7214.
