A New Heart Valve for Lorraine

Lorraine came to Independence Health System with a severe mitral valve leak that required a complex and serious operation. From the beginning, she and her family were impressed by Independence Health System's thoroughness, organization, and patience. Her surgery lasted approximately six hours. In addition to repairing the mitral valve, the doctor had to carefully remove calcium buildup from her upper heart chamber using a specialized tool, which they even took the time to show her. When unexpected complications arose during the procedure, their ability to think outside the box proved crucial — they  discovered that Lorraine’s tricuspid valve was also severely regurgitating due to an oversized flap. Demonstrating remarkable skill and innovation, the doctor fashioned a new valve using Lorraine's own heart tissue.
