From Traumatic Car Accident to Triathlon Training: Achilles Tendon Recovery Story

How Independence Health System Helped Yukon Ebbitt Get Back to Running After a Devastating Injury

Life Before the Injury

My name is Yukon Ebbitt. I’m 21 years old and a recent graduate of the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. I’ve always been active—running, working out, playing sports, and training for a triathlon. Outside of fitness, I enjoy cooking, woodworking, and spending time with my girlfriend and her dog.

Everything changed on March 10, 2024.

A Traumatic Car Accident Changes Everything

That morning started like any other—I completed my usual 5K run before heading out on a road trip to Boston. Just 30 minutes into our drive, the weather turned dangerous. Freezing rain and snow created icy conditions, causing our car to lose control.

We spun across the highway, hit the median, then a hillside, flipping before landing upright. The doors were jammed shut, and the car began filling with smoke. I had to kick out the windshield so we could escape.

In that moment, survival was the only thing on my mind. I didn’t realize I had severely injured my Achilles tendon.

A Misdiagnosed Achilles Injury

At a nearby hospital, my Achilles was stitched, and I was told it wasn’t cut. But in the weeks that followed, I struggled just to walk.

For someone who used to run daily and bike 12 miles, the loss of mobility was devastating. I knew I needed a foot and ankle specialist.

Finding Expert Care at Independence Health System

When I met Dr. Ryan Flanigan, a foot and ankle specialist at Independence Health System, he quickly identified the issue—a partially cut Achilles tendon that had been missed.

Instead of surgery, Dr. Flanigan recommended a conservative treatment plan, including:

  • Heel lift support
  • Guided recovery plan
  • Referral to physical therapy

This marked the turning point in my recovery.

Physical Therapy That Changed Everything

I began working with Dan Schaus at Independence Health System Physical Therapy in Norwin, attending sessions twice a week.

Each visit focused on:

  • Strengthening my leg muscles
  • Improving mobility and flexibility
  • Gradual return to everyday movement

Dan’s supportive and personable approach made a huge difference. Our conversations kept me motivated, and before I knew it, I was making real progress.

The Moment I Started Running Again

After a few weeks, Dan and Dr. Flanigan collaborated and cleared me to start running again—slowly, in intervals.

That moment was incredible.

Just weeks earlier, I could barely walk. Now, I was jogging again. It felt like I had my life back.

Advanced Therapy Accelerates Recovery

To address lingering stiffness and pain, we introduced blood flow restriction therapy, which helped increase muscle strength more efficiently.

The results were noticeable:

  • Reduced pain
  • Increased strength
  • Improved performance

Even when I had to travel, Dan ensured I could continue my progress with at-home exercises—and even checked in regularly.

Back to Peak Performance Faster Than Expected

My recovery exceeded expectations:

4 months: Running a 5K again

6 months: Running faster than before the accident

8 months: Completed a 5-mile Turkey Trot at an 8-minute pace

What I thought would take a year or more happened in a matter of months.

A Testament to Expert Care and Determination

Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful for the care I received at Independence Health System. Dr. Flanigan and Dan Schaus didn’t just treat my injury—they helped me reclaim my passion.

From struggling to walk to training again, this journey taught me that setbacks don’t define us—perseverance does.
