BUTLER, Pa., July, 2 2026 — Infectious disease specialist Jimmy Chua, MD, has joined the medical staff at Independence Health System Butler Memorial and Clarion hospitals, where he will serve as the medical director of infectious diseases, provide consultations for inpatient care and establish an outpatient clinic to expand access to specialized care.
An award-winning, board-certified infectious disease specialist, Dr. Chua treats a wide range of complex clinical conditions, including surgical infections; complicated skin and soft tissue infections; HIV and other sexually transmitted infections; pneumonia; endocarditis; osteomyelitis; meningitis; sepsis; viral hepatitis and other liver-related infections, as well as infections caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites.
Born and raised in Manila, Philippines, Dr. Chua earned his medical degree from the University of Santo Tomas, recognized as the oldest university in Asia. After practicing in Manila, he relocated to Marshfield, Wisconsin, where he completed an internal medicine residency at Marshfield Clinic, followed by fellowships in infectious diseases and clinical microbiology at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Dr. Chua is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.
In 2001, Dr. Chua founded the annual “What’s New in Medicine” regional medical education conference for practitioners in southeastern Washington. His leadership and clinical work have earned him multiple honors, including the Washington chapter of the American College of Physicians’ (ACP) Internist of the Year Award in 2005 and 2023, and the ACP Laureate Award in 2013 — an honor reserved for senior physicians recognized for excellence and peer approval in the field of internal medicine.
Dr. Chua enjoys swimming, traveling with his family, caring for his aquarium, tending to his garden, listening to audiobooks and playing chess. He speaks English, Tagalog, Mandarin, Hokkien and Spanish.
“Joining Independence Health System is meaningful to me both professionally and personally, as it allows me to provide expert care for patients in the region while practicing medicine closer to my children,” Chua said.
