The Latrobe Area Hospital Charitable Foundation was pleased to award two outstanding students with $10,000.00 Shaw Gamble Nursing Scholarships. Recipients of the Shaw Gamble Scholarships are selected based on academic performance, extracurricular involvement, and their expressed interest in pursuing a career in nursing.
Greater Latrobe High School student, Bailey Onifer, excelled both academically and athletically. She participated in numerous National Honor Society programs and served as Captain on both her school and travel volleyball teams.
In addition to her academic and athletic accomplishments, Bailey dedicated her time to numerous clubs and the Student Visionaries of the Year Program through Blood Cancer United. As a Student Visionary of the Year Candidate, she helped organize the Latrobe Rockdown fundraising campaign in 2026, which successfully raised over $17,000 to support blood cancer research. Her dedication exemplifies her leadership and passion to helping others.
This fall, Bailey will attend the University of Pittsburgh to pursue a degree in Nursing. Following graduation, she aspires to become a pediatric nurse. Her passion for working with children has been strongly influenced by her mother, a dedicated kindergarten teacher at Baggaley Elementary School. Through her mother's example of compassion, patience, and commitment to helping young students thrive, Bailey developed a desire to make a positive impact in the lives of children through healthcare.
Derry Area High School student, Keegan Roddy, was described by her teachers as a student of exceptional character, dedication, and achievement. Throughout her time at Derry Area High School, she distinguished herself academically and athletically. She participated in numerous National Honor Society programs, served as Varsity Swim Team Captain, and qualified for both WPIAL and PIAA competitions.
In addition to her academic and athletic accomplishments, Keegan dedicated more than 200 hours of community service, exemplifying her commitment to making a positive difference as a DAHS Trojan Role Model.
This fall she will attend Saint Vincent College, where she will pursue a degree in Nursing while continuing her swimming career. Upon graduation, Keegan aspires to become a pediatric or emergency medicine nurse. She shared that her goal as registered nurse is to make a positive difference and help as many people she can every day.
We wish both Bailey and Keegan much academic success and look forward to having them join the ranks of the talented nurses that dedicate their careers to healing patients and changing lives.

The Shaw Gamble Nursing Scholarship is named for Mrs. Elizabeth Shaw Gamble, who was a resident of the Ligonier Valley. Mrs. Gamble endowed a scholarship in 2009 with Latrobe Area Hospital Charitable Foundation because of her strong interest in wanting to further the nursing profession at Latrobe Area Hospital. In fact, Mrs. Gamble’s philanthropic pursuits are a reflection of her father’s philanthropic activities that he valued during his lifetime. Walter Carlyle Shaw, Mrs. Gamble’s father, was one of the founders of the G.C. Murphy Company. Under his leadership, G.C. Murphy grew into one of the nation’s major retail chains.
