Independence Health System Expands Interventional Radiology / Welcomes Interventional Radiologists

GREENSBURG, PA, May 1, 2025 … Independence Health System (IHS) announced that interventional radiologists Michael Akinyemi, MD, and Christopher Enwonwu, MD, have joined IHS’s Westmoreland and Latrobe facilities, and will work with Dr. Todd Hrbek. The addition of two new providers enables the expansion of interventional radiology care across Westmoreland County via Westmoreland Hospital and Latrobe Hospital.
Dr. Akinyemi is board-certified in interventional radiology and diagnostic radiology. He serves as the Medical Director of Interventional Radiology at Independence Health System in the Westmoreland area.” Prior to joining IHS, he served as Chairman, Chief, and Medical Director of the Department of Radiology and Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC)-Susquehanna/Williamsport. Dr. Akinyemi earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin and completed his fellowship in interventional radiology at Penn State University-Hershey. He completed his diagnostic radiology residency in the Bridgeport Hospital/Yale University Program and his general surgery residency through the State University of New York Program in Syracuse, NY. He is a member of the American College of Radiology and the Radiology Society of North America.

Dr. Enwonwu is board-certified in interventional radiology and diagnostic radiology. Most recently, he served as Interventional Radiologist in the Vascular and Interventional Radiology department at UPMC-Susquehanna/Williamsport. He earned his medical degree from New York Medical School. He completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey and his fellowship in vascular and interventional radiology through the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He holds professional memberships in the National Medical Fellowship, American Roentgen Ray Society, Radiological Society of North America, American College of Radiology, Pennsylvania Radiological Society, and the Society of Interventional Radiology.
